Alemayehu Bekele Tefera

String Portrait Artist
His work transforms thread into expressive human stories. His artistic journey began with portraiture and a fascination with how faces convey emotion, history, and identity, leading him to specialize in string art as a medium that unites patience, precision, and feeling.
He creates portraits by weaving thread around hundreds and sometimes thousands of nails mapped onto wooden surfaces, building depth, shadow, and form through carefully placed lines. From afar, the works appear strikingly realistic; up close, they reveal intricate geometric pathways. This interplay between realism and abstraction defines his practice, with a focus on cultural icons, spiritual figures, and individuals whose stories inspire collective emotion.
Both meditative and architectural, his process requires mathematical alignment and hours of manual craftsmanship. Exhibited internationally, including in Paris and New York, his work pushes the boundaries of string art portraiture while elevating thread into a powerful medium for storytelling, identity, and cultural preservation.
